These questions are simple. They cost nothing. And they signal, repeatedly and consistently, that AI use is something that belongs in normal work conversations, not just in dedicated training sessions.

It includes governance leadership, not just advocacy

Good AI leadership also means being willing to pump the brakes when necessary. To ask whether a proposed AI use case has been thought through properly. To raise the question of what happens when it goes wrong. To ensure that the organisation is not just chasing novelty but making considered decisions.

This is the part of AI leadership that gets less attention in the enthusiasm around productivity gains. But it is the part that protects organisations from the reputational and operational risks that come with moving fast without enough thought.

The leaders who do this well are not sceptics of AI. They are clear-eyed about both the opportunity and the obligation.

What it looks like in practice

Good AI leadership in 2026 looks like a director who uses Copilot to prepare for their one-to-ones. A CFO who asks their team to run financial summaries through AI before a board pack is assembled, and then reviews the output critically.
